Parent Has Dementia? Choose In-Home Dementia Care To Help You

by Florence Morrison

If your parent has dementia, there will be a time when they need 24/7 care. This can be difficult for families, especially if everyone works full-time. One thing you can do to help is hire in-home dementia care services. This will allow your parent to stay home where they are most comfortable. Keep reading to learn more about this type of service.

Monitors Their Symptoms

The in-home care service can help monitor your parent's symptoms. This is important as dementia is a progressive disease, which means it gets worse over time. Your parent may have little memory loss in the beginning but by the end may not know who you are.

You will also notice your parent's mood will change, as well as their behavior. They may have always been a mild person and now may become aggressive. An in-home care provider will recognize these symptoms to help you deal with them.

Services Offered

Not all in-home dementia care offers the same services. Some services may offer medical care while others may not. Some offer companion services for your parent. This means they will spend time with them, do activities with them, and simply sit and talk. Some services provide personal care, which involves helping your parent with bathing, toileting, dressing, eating, and more. Homemaker services may also be offered, which can help with preparing meals and housekeeping.

Some in-home dementia care offers skilled care. They can help take care of wounds, give your parent injections, do physical therapy with them, and more. They can check their vitals, including blood pressure and oxygen levels, and listen to their heart. Your parent's physician may work with the service and tell them what care they should provide.

Give You Time

If you are a full-time caregiver for your parent, this can get very stressful. This could result in you not providing the best care for your parent at times. An in-home dementia care service can give you a break so you can get away from the home and do something for yourself.

You can have the service come once a week or even every day. If you work, you can have the in-home care service come much more, and some may live in your home with you to help you provide 24/7 care. This will ensure your parent gets the best possible care.

About Me

Tips for Helping Your Favorite Senior Stay in Great Health

I have a passion for seniors. When I was growing up, my granny was my best friend. She helped me with my homework every day after school and was always ready to lend an ear when I needed someone to talk to. As I grew older and my grandmother did as well, she developed dementia. My parents, siblings, and I all took turns visiting her home to give her the extra care she needed. I learned a lot during this experience and know there are others out there with elderly relatives they are already caring for or suspect may need some extra care. I decided to create a blog to share my senior care tips with anyone and everyone who needs the advice. Come back often for new posts!
